By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 20, 2024, the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) conducted consultations on Standards development on Vegetables in La Gracia, Cayo.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Belize Bureau of Standards met with potato farmers in La Gracia Village to assess their potato value chain and challenges associated with improving quality of the final product.
The BBS presented on the benefits of implementing standards to the value chain – from seed to plate.
The Ministry of Agriculture provided training on Post Harvest Practices in Potato Production and JICA demonstrated the benefits of implementing of best practices in three potato plots:
The Ministry of Agriculture’s plot using best practices;
A plot using regular farmer practices; and
A plot demonstrating controlled nutritional intake.
These demonstration plots will focus on production and quality yields from these controlled plots which will be further analyzed with the objective of improving these practices.
“This approach is essential in engaging key stakeholders in Belize’s vegetable value chains to addressing concerns about quality, climate change, among others with the ultimate goal to develop and implement a robust standards and quality assurance program,” the BBS noted.
