More than 160 candidates including independent candidates apply to contest 2024 Municipal Elections

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 21, 2024, candidates from Major political parties and Independent candidates countrywide were nominated as official candidates for the March 6 Municipal Elections.

Data from the Elections and Boundaries Department indicate that for the Major political parties, PUP and UDP, 67 candidates applied from each party applied.

From the Belize Progressive Party, 7 candidates were nominated and from the People’s Democratic Movement, 11 candidates were nominated.

Eleven candidates were also nominated as Independent candidates.

A total of 163 candidates were nominated countrywide.

The incumbent PUP rallied demonstrating their political strength and the opposition UDP also paraded through the streets.
