By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said today that police are aiming to prevent potential retaliation for the killing of Troy Hyde, 36, and Lamisha Moody, 15, in the area of Curl Thompson Street on Wednesday night.
“Certainly, yes, we do anticipate that there is going to be retaliation and since last night, we have put additional resources in the Jane Usher Boulevard area, with a view to see how best we can neutralize whatever possible retaliation that may be,” Williams stated. Police already have one person being questioned and a vehicle suspected to be involved impounded.
The working theories of the crime are either internal gang rivalry or outside gang presence to commit the killing, said Williams, but no specific motive has been unearthed as yet. Nine-millimeter pistols and not any high-powered rifles as erroneously reported were used in the incident.
While Hyde was acquitted of murder in 2022 and had a past, the Commissioner acknowledged that Hyde was trying to turn his life around and as a result, the Jane Usher Boulevard area has receded from the daily crime headlines: “I know that Troy Hyde [does] have his past, but certainly we were seeing a more positive trend coming from him working in the area working with the LIU [Leadership Intervention Unit] program and trying to see how best we could have used him to make the area as calm as possible as it can be.” He noted that in the past year there was little to no activity related to crime in the previously “hot” area and much of that was down to Hyde’s work. Now, police must pick up the pieces and hope that the raw feelings from the killing do not escalate to a breaking of the peace that currently exists.
