United States Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya discusses strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation on migration, civil security in Jamaica

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: United States Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya visited Jamaica on February 19-20.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation on civilian security, migration, and human rights.

Under Secretary Zeya underscored the strength of the U.S.-Jamaica partnerships in meetings with Jamaican government officials, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith and Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding.

Discussions included the United States and Jamaica’s cooperation in civilian security and law enforcement, human rights, and rule of law. 

In addition, they discussed the Haiti Multinational Security Support mission. 

Notably, the Under Secretary shared in the official opening of the 10th Child Friendly Space developed through the U.S.-Jamaica Child Protection Compact Partnership, which provides safety and support to children who are victims or witnesses of crime. 

She also explored with educators and youth, opportunities to strengthen the capacity of families and communities to prevent youth violence.

The U.S. Under Secretary is scheduled to visit Belize as well.
