By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) will be updating the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) on the new protocols for the export of cattle to Mexico at its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The BLPA is holding it 45th AGM on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the BLPA headquarters at Mile 47.5 on the George Price Highway.

BAHA will inform the BLPA members about the current state and future prospects of the cattle exports to Mexico, which have been increasing in the last few years. BAHA has been collaborating with the BLPA to ensure that Belize meets the import standards set by Mexico.

On Monday, BAHA’s Managing Director Zoe Zetina and BAHA’s Director of Animal Health Dr Roxanna Alvarez met with the BLPA Board of Directors and exporter Johan Wall to discuss the modifications for the continued export of cattle to Mexico. Belize is now following new long-term export protocols that were agreed upon during recent meetings held in Mexico City between BAHA  and Mexico’s National Service of Health, Safety, and Agro-Food Quality (SENASICA).

BAHA will also update the BLPA members on the situation of the New World screwworm outbreak in Costa Rica and their measures taken to contain the disease from entering Belize.

BAHA is a statutory body that operates under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.

Prime Minister John Briceño will also be addressing the BLPA AGM.
