By Aaron Humes: Ambassador James Murphy, a former Jesuit priest turned diplomat and Government official, was laid to rest this afternoon following a memorial service in Belmopan.
Murphy died on February 17, according to an official death announcement from the Government of Belize.
Murphy served as a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and was a former president of St John’s College (SJC), but later left the priesthood.
He was appointed Ambassador of Belize to the United States under the administration of Sir Manuel Esquivel, and concurrently as Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).
Murphy was also Cabinet Secretary under the first Dean Barrow administration, as well as a former High Commissioner of Belize to Canada.
He was a committed supporter of resolving the unfounded claim by Guatemala to Belize at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and traveled the country in support of the “Yes” camp prior to the 2019 referendum. He also wrote a book on the negotiations to resolve the dispute.
Murphy was married and is survived by his family and remembered by his many colleagues and friends during a lifetime of public service to Belize. May he now rest in peace.
