By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Santa Elena’s St Ignatius High School has given recognition to their 2007 Valedictorian, Breaking Belize News (BBN)‘ own Zoila Palma Gonzalez, for being a trailblazer. Palma Gonzalez is aso the Sales and Marketing Manager in her family’s business, Palma Lumber Sales.

“Zoila Maria Palma Gonzalez, a beacon of journalistic integrity and community activism from Santa Elena, Cayo, has carved a notable path since her valedictorian graduation from St. Ignatius High School in 2007,” St Ignatius High School wrote in their Natius Alumni Spotlight on Success recognition.

“With an Associate Degree in Primary Education from Sacred Heart Junior College, Zoila’s journey took a transformative turn in 2016 when she discovered a deep-seated passion for writing. This newfound love led her to a distinguished career as a Digital Journalist for [BBN], where her insightful articles have gained national attention and been recognized on international platforms.”

Her alma mater said Palma Gonzalez’s passion is journalism.

“Her commitment to excellence in journalism was further enhanced through participation in prestigious programs such as the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and training from the Poynter Institute, equipping her with unparalleled expertise in digital literacy and media responsibility,” St Ignatius High School said.

The school also recognized her involvement in the Santa Elena community.

“Beyond her professional achievements, Zoila’s impact extends into her community and beyond, epitomizing the role of media in shaping democratic societies,” St Ignatius said.

“From leading food drives during the COVID-19 pandemic to empowering young women and the general public with media literacy, her efforts underscore the essential bond between responsible journalism and civic engagement.”

In their Spotlight on Success, the Cayo high school also recognized Palma Gonzalez’s dedication to her family.

“As a mother of two, she instills values of service and determination, guiding her children through involvement in the Belize Police Department’s Youth Cadet Corps,” the St Ignatius Spotlight said.

“Zoila is a luminary in digital innovation, passionately advocating for accurate, responsible journalism’s importance and pivotal role in democracy.

“Her aspiration to inspire and empower people, especially young women, to pursue their dreams with vigor reflects her belief in the transformative power of media and community service, making her a distinguished alumna of St. Ignatius High School and a role model for future generations.”

For her part, Palma Gonzalez thanked the school for the recognition and her family for the support.

“Thank you St. Ignatius High School for the Natius Alumni Spotlight!” Palma Gonzalez said in a social media post.

“I am so grateful to God for my amazing journey! Huge Shoutout to my parents for their unconditional support! My little family, Manuel Antonio Gonzalez, Zab and Ricky, have been a part of this transformational journey and my daughter Zabrina Pałma Gonzałez now attends St. Ignatius and I couldn’t be more PROUD! All for the Glory of God!”
