By Aaron Humes: The official Instagram account of the Jamaican-American band Morgan Heritage this afternoon confirmed the death of star and band leader Peter Anthony Morgan, known as “Peetah,” aged 47.

Morgan died on Friday but details surrounding his passing have so far not been released. Per the Jamaica Observer, the notice announced, “Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing. Thank you!”

The Morgan family has been active in reggae and dancehall since 1994 when the band was formed by Peetah and brothers and sisters Una Morgan, Roy ‘Gramps’ Morgan, Nakhamyah ‘Lukes’ Morgan and Memmalatel ‘Mr Mojo’ Morgan. All five were the children of Denroy Morgan of May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, who migrated to the United States and forged a music career before dying of cancer in 2022.

The band released 12 studio albums and gained a worldwide following, winning a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2015 for “Strictly Roots” and being nominated again two years later for “Avrakedabra.” They are best known for their songs “Don’t Haffi Dread”, “How Come”, and “Reggae Bring Back Love” among many others. The band first visited Belize in 2001 and, after a 2009 visit for a concert was rescheduled due to the swine flu scare, returned in 2023 as headliners of the second Belize International Music and Food Festival.

May Peetah Morgan rest in peace.
