Belize Cabinet: Anthony “Boots” Martinez’s attack on Governor General may be unlawful

By Horace Palacio: In a strongly worded statement released yesterday, Cabinet moved to defend the office of the Governor General following recent remarks made by Anthony “Boots” Martinez. The statement emphasizes the constitutional position of the Governor General and describes Martinez’s comments as “unwarranted, unprecedented, and unlawful.”

Cabinet’s position is that the Governor General’s is the representative of the Crown in Belize, and the office is afforded legal protections. It stresses the Prime Minister’s constitutional duty to keep the Governor General informed and the illegality of bringing the Governor General’s official capacity into disrepute.

“Our laws further mandates that it is unlawful for any person to bring the Governor General in her official capacity into contempt, disrepute or disaffection. Whether one agrees or disagrees with this, the fact remains that this is what the supreme law of the country and the laws of Belize commands.”

The statement concludes by announcing that the Cabinet has sought advice from the Attorney General on how to proceed in this matter.
