Belize fall 4-3 to British Virgin Islands in Concacaf Under-20 Championship Qualifiers

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under 20 Belize Men’s National Team (U20 BMNT) lost their second game in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship Qualifiers 4-3 to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) on Tuesday in Managua, Nicaragua.

Belize took the lead in the Group A match at the Estadio Nacional de Nicaragua with a 16’ goal by Jaheim Mena.

However, BVI bounced back and took a 2-1 lead on goals by Azani Callwoodnin the 38’ and Curtis Lane in the 40’. Callwood made it 3-1 just before the half scoring in the 45’+2.

Belize rallied back and tied the match at 3-3 on goals by Isaac Tager in the 54’ and Feliz Martinez in the 58’.

Johari Lacey gave BVI a 4-3 lead in the 70’ and it eventually gave them the win.

In the other Group A match on Tuesday, Nicaragua play Anguilla at 7:00 pm.

Belize have now lost both games they’ve played so far. The U20 BMNT lost 6-0 to Nicaragua on Sunday.

Nicaragua and Cuba, who have already played two games, lead the competition with six points. Tied on goal difference at +14 each, Cuba are in the top spot on number of goals scored (15 to 14).

British Virgin Islands follow in third place with three points from the Belize win.

Belize and Anguilla don’t have any points, though Belize have played two time to Anguilla’s one game.

Belize’s will play Cuba at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 29 and will close against Anguilla on Saturday, March 2 at 2:00 pm.
