By Horace Palacio: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is using his country’s G20 presidency to amplify the voice of the Global South in international decision-making. His vision includes reforming global governance structures like the United Nations and giving developing nations greater representation in institutions like the IMF and World Bank.

Lula’s position received support at the recent G20 foreign ministers meeting in Rio de Janeiro. Finance ministers meeting this week in Sao Paulo face further pressure as Brazil pushes for wealth redistribution to boost emerging economies.

Despite potential resistance from some veto-wielding countries within the UN Security Council, Brazil’s G20 leadership has already brought progress. The insistence on including the African Union as a full G20 member is a significant step.

“There are many more interests that unite us than differences that separate us,” Lula stated, emphasizing the shared goals of the Global South.

Lula’s presidency emphasizes poverty reduction, addressing climate change, and promoting equitable representation in global decision-making. This shift in G20 dynamics places developing nations at the forefront of crafting economic policies.

A G7 official acknowledges this new geopolitical landscape: “The G20 is becoming the main battlefield between advanced economies and the Global South economies.”

While this shift may challenge traditional power structures, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell sees the enhanced role of the Global South as a positive development fostering inclusivity and avoiding a divided world.
