Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler expects 2024 to be record breaking year for tourism

Posted: Tuesday, February 27, 2024. 6:44 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler has expressed his optimism and confidence in the tourism sector’s growth and resilience by saying he expects 2024 to be a record breaking year for Belize’s tourism industry.

Mahler told 7 News Belize that only a catastrophe would cause 2024 not to overcome the pre-Covid-19 pandemic numbers.

“We are on track to have a record breaking year,” Mahler said.

“The entire country is seeing a boom. January we saw probably a 13 % increase over 2019; somewhere around 57- 58,000 people came … The same thing looks for February, and the same thing looks for March, talking to people in the private sector.

Mahler attributed Belize’s boom to the tenacity of the tourism marketing campaign and the attraction of more air routes and more land and sea arrivals.

To surpass 2019 when Belize recorded 503,166, Belize would have to average 42,000 arrivals per month in 2024. The Ministry of Tourism is banking on a record year based on the higher arrivals in the first two months. January had  57,6128 arrivals. That’s 7,038 more arrivals than January 2019 when 50,590 tourists visited Belize. The 57,000+ arrivals in January also surpasses the 55,674 that arrived in December 2019, the highest monthly number for 2019.

Mahler said the Ministry of Tourism is not alone in achieving the sector’s growth and recognized the efforts by the stakeholders in the private sector including hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and tour operators, among others.
