By Horace Palacio: Belize is actively participating in the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly, held at the United Nations Environment Program Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, from February 26 to March 1. Dr. Kenrick Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management, is leading the Belize delegation.
The assembly is centered around the theme “Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.” This theme highlights the importance of global cooperation in addressing the interconnected environmental crises facing our planet.
Belize’s participation provides an opportunity to showcase its national efforts in combating environmental and climate change challenges. It also serves as a platform for the country to urge world leaders to uphold their commitments and provide vital support to developing nations.
In his national statement, CEO Williams emphasized Belize’s progress in fulfilling its international environmental obligations. These advancements include developing robust policy frameworks, establishing necessary institutions (such as the Climate Change and Carbon Markets Initiative Bill and the National Biodiversity Office), and making strides in areas like chemical management and conservation targets. He further stressed the need for continued support from multilateral partners to reduce Belize’s vulnerability to the devastating impacts of climate change.
The Belizean delegation will also engage in high-level dialogues on climate financing, exploring innovative solutions to address the triple environmental crises. A particular focus will be placed on Belize’s pioneering “blue bond” as a successful conservation financing mechanism.
Dr. Williams is joined by Mr. Saul Cruz, Acting Director of the National Biodiversity Office.
