By Rubén Morales Iglesias: At the opening of the 46th Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regular Summit of Heads of Government in Georgetown, Guyana, on Wednesday, CARICOM Chairman Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali say trade barriers should be removed to foster inter-regional trade and promote food security to eliminate hunger and malnutrition.
Irfaan Ali said the trade barriers are one of the challenges that CARICOM states face as they limit trade in agriculture and put a damper on food security in the region.
“We’re we competing against each other,” Dr Irfaan Ali said during the opening of the CARICOM Summit.
“People of this region call upon your leaders to remove these barriers. Let them hear you loudly. These barriers need to go and must go, urgently.”

Irfaan Ali said that to promote trade within the region, an inter-regional ferry service is starting among Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago
“We will have a single window operating in all the countries,” Dr Irfaan Ali said.
“We’re starting with Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago as the test. And only announcing that, we’re already getting tremendous private sector interest to take this in the wider region and this will be an important development for our region
The CARICOM chair said that CARICOM is working on setting up a common system for customs and immigration to facilitate the implementation of the ferry service.
Belize is represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Francis Fonseca.
