By Horace Palacio: The terms of both the Belize City and Belmopan City Councils, led by the People’s United Party (PUP), are set to expire without a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in place with the Christian Workers Union (CWU). This leaves union members employed by the councils in a state of uncertainty.
Leonora Flowers, President of the CWU, expressed disappointment at the lack of progress. “Our members have been waiting and waiting for the CBA that needs to be signed,” she said. “The Mayor of Belize City had promised to finalize it by December, but that promise has not been fulfilled.”
The lack of a CBA means that issues such as wages, benefits, and working conditions remain unresolved for CWU members working for the Belize City and Belmopan Councils. With the councils’ terms ending, it is unclear when or if a new agreement will be reached.
