Town Administrator in San Ignacio and Santa Elena calls out Mayor Earl Trapp for disruption of transition process

Posted: Friday, March 1, 2024. 2:34 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Town Administrator of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Ismael Perez issued a statement calling out former Mayor Earl Trapp for disruption of transition process.

As it stipulated by law, the last day of February, the city and Town councils across the country were dissolved.

Therefore, the Mayor and Councilors are without authority and the Town Administrator is the head of the council until the new council is elected and sworn in.

“Despite the absence of a formal handover from the former Mayor Earl Trapp, I, Ismael Perez, Town Administrator of San Ignacio/Santa Elena, took proactive steps to address critical issues pertaining to the management of municipal assets. Recognizing the importance of a smooth transition, a meeting was convened with Garage employees, particularly with department heads, to discuss the inventory of ongoing works and assets essential for municipal operations. It is important to clarify that my intention was not to impede routine tasks such as garbage collection, but rather to assert administrative oversight and ensure informed decision-making as mandated by my role as Town Administrator.

However, the proceedings were disrupted when Mr. Trapp unexpectedly barged in, instructing employees to disregard the directives of the Town Administrator, when he very well knew that he had no authority whatsoever to even be there in the capacity of Mayor,” Perez explained.

In addition, Perez said that the former Mayor’s behavior underscores the challenges associated with the transition process.

“Despite this setback, the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring continuity and upholding the interests of the community.

As the Municipality prepares for the upcoming elections, it is imperative that all stakeholders work together to maintain stability and continuity in governance. The San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council reaffirms its dedication to serving the needs of its residents and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability,” Perez added.
