Former San Ignacio/Santa Elena Mayor Earl Trapp condemns escalation of campaign vandalism

Posted: Saturday, March 2, 2024. 11:56 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Former Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Earl Trapp, issued a strong statement this morning regarding the recent escalation of vandalism during the current municipal election campaign. Trapp, a seasoned politician with a long history of service to the community, expressed shock and disappointment at the defacement of a downtown mural and other campaign materials.

In his statement, Trapp described the vandalism as “a devious act of outright malice and hate.” He highlighted the perpetrators’ calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation by using his name and party colors in the defacing of public property. Trapp emphasized that this criminal behavior transcends political affiliation and should alarm all citizens regardless of their political views.

Trapp went on to denounce the escalation of dirty tactics in the campaign: “Politics cannot descend to lower levels than what we are witnessing here. For my opponents to engage in criminal behavior is bad enough, but for them to do so in such a manner that attempts to taint my image and reputation is completely and totally reprehensible.”

The former Mayor made it clear that he has a history of respectful campaigning and that he would never resort to the destruction of his opponent’s campaign materials. He expressed his sadness that his beloved towns have become embroiled in this kind of divisive behavior.

Trapp concluded his message with a call to uphold the values that define San Ignacio and Santa Elena: “Let us not allow our town to be tainted by paid criminals. Let us stand up for the core values that have always defined our community.” He ended with a plea for peace and safety for all residents throughout the remainder of the campaign.
