United Women’s Group extends sympathies on death of City Administrator Stephanie Lindo Garbutt; denounces femicide

Posted: Saturday, March 9, 2024. 1:58 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The People’s United Party’s United Women’s Group (UWG) has issued a statement extending sympathies to the families and friends of Stephanie Lindo Garbutt following her brutal murder this morning.

“Today, we are confronted with the brutal reality of femicide as we mourn the tragic loss of Stephanie Lindo Garbutt, a pillar of our community and the Belize City Council’s City Administrator. Stephanie’s life was cruelly taken in a senseless act of violence, allegedly by her husband, Oswald Wallace Garbutt, who then ended his own life. Their child now faces the unimaginable grief of losing both parents. It’s not just a statistic; it’s a heartbreaking loss of life, leaving families shattered and communities in mourning,” the UWG stated.

The UWG says that its members are united in grief and determination to combat femicide and violence against women in our community.

“Stephanie’s untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to address the epidemic of gender-based violence. As members of our group, we are committed to taking tangible steps to create a safer and more equitable society for all. Our sincere condolences to the Lindo and Garbutt families,” the UWG added.

The UWG called on the wider community to assist in supporting survivors of domestic violence, including donations to local shelters and organizations that provide essential services; educating about the signs of domestic violence and where to seek help through workshops and awareness campaigns, and building more safe spaces for refugees of domestic situations; and lobbying lawmaker to enact stricter laws and policies, increase funding for mental health services, rehabilitation, and counseling.

The UWG urged that as we observe Women’s Month, we should honor Stephanie’s memory by turning our grief into action. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that no more lives are lost to femicide.
