Weekend shooting in Newtown Barracks leaves one injured

Posted: Saturday, March 9, 2024. 7:41 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: A night of revelry in the Newtown Barracks area turned violent early this morning when a shooting erupted around 3:10 am.

According to police reports, officers stationed near the party strip heard a single gunshot. They then witnessed two men running in opposite directions. One, identified as 20-year-old Drishawn Coffin, was clad in a white shirt and appeared injured in the abdomen area. The other, 57-year-old Richard William Terry, was clothed in black and brandishing what appeared to be a firearm.

Reports further detail that Mr. Terry was yelling, accusing Mr. Coffin of theft. Police ordered Mr. Terry to drop the weapon, but he refused and reportedly pointed it towards a group of people where Mr. Coffin had fled. Fearing for the safety of bystanders, officers deployed a single rubber bullet, disarming Mr. Terry. He was subsequently apprehended.

Medical attention was immediately rendered to both men. Mr. Coffin sustained a gunshot wound, while the extent of Mr. Terry’s injuries remains undisclosed. Both were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The investigation revealed that the weapon used was a licensed Ruger P95 9mm pistol, registered to Mr. Terry and with a valid license expiring in February 2025. Police have confiscated the firearm and ammunition for further investigation.

Authorities have not yet released a motive for the shooting and the investigation remains ongoing.
