By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Delton Rojas who won the70-mile 22nd Annual BEL Junior Cross Country Cycling Classic in a heated sprint over G-Flow’s Jaylen Briceño in 2023 has moved up to the Elite Category. However, Briceño is still a junior rider and will be aiming to take the big prize this coming Sunday, March 17.

But he’ll have tough competition from Evrit Matute who finished third and Benito Gutierrez who was fourth in 2023.

Tyler Tejeda, who’s been at the forefront of many Junior races and who was second to Briceño in the Westrac Belmopan Cycling Classic on March 3, will also be gunning for the top prize.

He’ll also to fend off competition from Tamron Morris, Richard Rosado, Keith Enwright, Jr., Devyn Major, and Jaheem Lewis, to name a few of the top contenders.

Last year, on Sunday, March 26, Briceño attacked early past Mirab coming into Belize, but Rojas countered, opening a gap which Briceño was able to close on Princess Margaret Drive. His attack by Mirab may have been a tad too early and may have cost him the race as Rojas edged him by a foot-length at the finish line at the Marion Jones Sports Complex.

This year, for the first time, the Junior race featured both men’s and women’s categories. The Men’s Junior-Youth race ride from the San Jose Succotz ferry to Belize City. The Women Junior-Youth cyclists will ride from La Democracia to Belize City.

On its way to Belize City the race will enter San Ignacio by the Cahal Pech Roundabout, on to the Joseph Andrews Boulevard, past the Santa Elena Bridge to La Loma Luz Boulevard, turn at the La Loma Luz Roundabout, on to the George Price Highway. The cyclists enter the old Capital via Lake Independence Boulevard, over the Chetumal Street Bridge to the Philip Goldson Highway, turn at the Rotary Roundabout, and finish in front of the BEL Corporate Headquarters on the Philip Goldson Highway.

In 2023, the race started at the Columbus Park in San Ignacio and finished at the Marion Jones. This year’s start at the Succotz ferry and finish at the Bel Headquarters, should make the race about six miles longer.

The Women Junior-Youth cyclists will follow the same route as they enter Belize City.

The registration deadline is Thursday, March 14.
