Posted: Wednesday, March 13, 2024. 7:44 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: A horrific shooting at a market in Belmopan, Belize has left a 43-year-old Dutch woman dead and two other Dutch nationals injured. An 11-year-old girl, who was not a Dutch citizen, was also tragically killed in the attack.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a gunman approached the victims seated at a market table and opened fire. Witnesses reported the man appeared to speak to the group before shooting. Belmopan police confirmed the 11-year-old victim was seemingly targeted along with the Dutch woman. A 7-year-old boy was injured and remains hospitalized.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of the 43-year-old woman, who resided in Belize. They did not release details about the injured Dutch nationals.

Police have arrested the shooter, described as Haitian-American, and confiscated his firearm. Unconfirmed reports suggest the victims may have been staying at an Airbnb connected to the gunman.

The motive for this senseless attack remains under investigation. Authorities are working to determine any relationship between the shooter and the victims.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to the family of the deceased woman. Updates on the condition of the injured and further investigation details will be provided as they become available.
