Upe Nai say tourists are recovering after tree fall collapses kitchen roof

Posted: Friday, March 15, 2024. 11:19 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Upe Nai cultural center in San Antonio Village, Cayo has issued a statement following the falling of a tree which caused the kitchen roof to collapse and injured 2 tourists.

“Yesterday was truly nerve-racking and gave us a blunt reminder of just how fast nature can change the course of things. We had several guests on a cooking class when a sudden wind sent a large tree hurling down towards our kitchen.  Our staff’s quick reaction managed to get most of our guests to safety, however 2 of our guests sustained some injuries when the roof collapsed. None of the injuries were life-threatening, but we did not speculate and called an ambulance immediately. We are happy that both guests received rapid medical attention and are recovering well as we speak,” Upe Nai said in a statement.

“We know many things, but one thing we don’t know… is giving up. So, we will rebuild, we will make it stronger, we will make it better and we look forward to hosting you again very soon.  We are deeply thankful for all your thoughts and prayers. To all our industry partners who reached out and checked on us. To all those lodges, communities, companies, and individuals who reached out to check on our safety… we are eternally grateful,” Upe Nai added.

Upe Nai is known for their knowledge of ancestral foods and traditions.

The lodge has apologized to all guests who had been booked for the next 3 weeks.

“We apologize profoundly to all our guests who have bookings with us for the next 3 weeks, as we will be unable to immerse you in our culture and food.  We only beg for your patience as we rebuild to give you an even better experience starting April 3rd.  Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions regarding bookings after April 3rd, or any other query you might have,” the lodge aid.

Upe Nai further expressed gratitude to everyone for their support.
