‘Do the right thing:’ Vybz Kartel urges release by Jamaica Court of Appeal after Privy Council overturn

Posted: Saturday, March 16, 2024. 7:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Speaking to the FOX-TV New York affiliate on Thursday, Adidja Palmer, alias Vybz Kartel, has urged Jamaica’s Court of Appeal to set him free immediately rather than order a retrial for himself and three others on murder charges.

Palmer told WNYW-TV’s Lisa Evers, “I feel victorious in this very moment as the Privy Council in their infinite wisdom, understood the assignment and remedied the situation by quashing my conviction!”

He went on to give thanks to his legal team, headed by counsel Isat Buchanan, for redressing the “grave injustice” done in the original trial.

The Privy Council found error by the original trial judge in allowing Juror X, later accused and convicted of attempted bribery, to continue in the case which it said compromised the safety of the convictions and violated the appellants’ right to a fair trial.

Palmer and his co-accused Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, can now request bail pending the Court of Appeal’s decision on a possible retrial.

In his statement, Palmer expressed confidence that the Court of Appeal, which previously upheld his conviction, would now do the “right thing.”

“I am also very confident that the Court of Appeal in Jamaica will do the right thing in the name of equity, fairness, and justice and free us. Some people have expressed their concern to me that a retrial may be ordered but to them, I say (albeit with my limited knowledge of the law) ‘what is there to retry?’ ” he said.

The Privy Council did not rule on two other grounds brought by the accused – that the jury instructions being issued late in the day put undue pressure on the jury members to deliver a verdict, and that the cell phone evidence gathered was improperly obtained by law.

Palmer concluded, “With that being said, the most important point to me is that I am an innocent man. So in reality, I’m not in the least bit worried as I know I will be acquitted and go home to my family whom I have not been together with for over 1[0 years].”
