Fight breaks out at William Dawson Peace Cup match at MCC; Commissioner says it’s not police’s fault

Posted: Tuesday, March 19, 2024. 1:31 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Over the weekend, an intended oasis of peace and tranquility became the scene of ugly brawling between women from rival neighborhoods in Northside Belize City.

Police had to wade into the stands at the MCC Grounds to prevent real ‘fire on the Barracks’ in the form of a large brawl that broke out between supporters of Majestic Alley-based Fort George and Kelly Street. They even had to fire warning shots to restore order.

On Monday, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that despite their intervention to heal scars through sports, it is not always easy to get each group to give peace a chance even for a few hours: “Of course, these are people who have issues with each other, and it is anticipated that things may go wrong or not according to how we expect, and the police will be there to ensure that they keep the peace and neutralize whatever may occur. And I think that the police did a good job and making sure that they contained the issue and prevented it from escalating further. So, I must commend the police officers for a job well done. It could have been worse, but again due to the good work of the police it was neutralized.”

The warning shots were necessary in the circumstances, but one incident cannot be allowed to undo the good of the William Dawson-branded events in both basketball and football, the Commisssioner said. An intervention was scheduled on Monday for those in police custody as a result of the brawl.
