Allan Pollard returns as deputy Mayor of Belize City Council after 7-3 vote over Kaya Cattouse

By Aaron Humes: In the first order of business for the new Belize City Council, on Tuesday members of the caucus met to choose a deputy mayor. A familiar face – Allan Pollard – has the job after a 7-3 vote over Kaya Cattouse.

Mayor Bernard Wagner went on record immediately following the municipal elections victory on March 6 to suggest that CitCo would do well with a female deputy mayor at his side: “I believe given we’ve always been promoting and trying to empower women, women inclusion, sustainable development, and being in women’s month, I think it would be symbolic for this city council which has always been male-heavy from 2018 in respect to deputy mayor, it would be a good start for us to have a female deputy mayor this time around.”

Cattouse, who received the second-highest number of votes at the polls on March 6, has contested the position twice before, but it was Pollard, who replaced Micah Goodin in 2018, who prevailed yet again. He told Channel 7 News that he was privileged and humbled to be Wagner’s number two once more: “It feels good that after today, seeing that all your colleagues have that confidence in your leadership after so long and wanting to see me in that role, it’s always a humbling feeling but it’s also a very rewarding feeling knowing you have that support at the end of the day. For me, any role at the council or in the political sphere in general to serve the people in any capacity is to me a privilege of course and it feels good at the end of the day, making sure that whenever the mayor’s not in, you assume that responsibility and having him have that confidence as well that everything is all well once he’s not in country the City Hall is in good hands, for me, that’s the major part of it.”

Pollard briefly challenged Wagner to be mayoral candidate for Belize City and some reports suggested he didn’t want competition for the secondary post, but he denied that. As for giving someone new a chance, Pollard contended that he let his colleagues make that decision, taking into account the Mayor’s preference – Wagner abstained from the vote.

By law, the deputy mayor is elected to serve for one year but can be re-elected.
