Consumer Price Index: Prices 4.1 percent higher than last year but generally trending down

By Aaron Humes: Prices continue to trend up compared to 2023 according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), but have been on a general downturn since 2022.

Prices for food rose 7.5 percent and restaurants and accommodation services by 12 percent but transport went down nearly 2 percent.

Milks, fruits and vegetables and even sugar recorded price increases (the latter due to necessary importation).

Belizeans are paying more to access restaurants and hotels; rental of homes, home maintenance, and services related to maintenance, repair, and security.

Belizeans are also generally paying more for their personal care and entertainment. It’s even costing more for beer, wine and cigarettes, as well as health costs including medicine (up 13 percent).

But diesel and regular gasoline prices are down as well as cost of international airfare.
