By Aaron Humes: 14-year-old athlete Jaaden Williams may not have won medals in his class at the recently concluded CARIFTA Games in Grenada, but he may have a chance to improve on his raw talent.

Williams, from Punta Gorda Town, has been offered a scholarship to attend a school in Jamaica, which has become an athletics powerhouse in the region.

According to Williams, who spoke to reporters on his return to Belize today, the offer came out of the blue despite his performance at the Games. Williams scored 11.96 meters (39 feet, 2.75 inches) in the triple jump, his specialty, and 5.37 meters (17 feet, 7.5 inches) in the long jump, but missed the medal stand.

Williams, who’ll be leaving in September, also hopes to become a pilot.

Belize secured gold at the Games via Demetrie Meyers’ repeat win in the 3,000 meters and bronze for Brooklyn Lyttle, 16, in the Under-17 girls’ long jump.
