All-time temperature record broken at Philip Goldson International Airport

Posted: Thursday, April 4, 2024. 6:42 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Wednesday’s high temperature at the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) hit an all-time record according to Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon, of the National Meteorological Service.

The mercury rose to 37.7 degrees Celsius, or 99.86 degrees Fahrenheit (rounded up to 99.9 degrees). That’s 0.4 degrees higher than the previous record set on March 19, 2003.

Gordon told XTV News that it might have been cooler in the City because of its position on the coastline, but after checking all of the records of the NMS, “It is not only for the day, it is an all-time record; so we have checked all the records for different months and different years, and what we have seen is that we have never gotten 100 degrees Fahrenheit here at the Airport, so this is a first.”

While the Met Service projected up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit for inland areas on Wednesday as it did on Tuesday, it turned out to be not as hot because a trough passing before the stationary front dipped down and created a westerly flow over much of the country, cooling temperatures in the West slightly to about 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Belize has seen increasing temperatures since the 1960s, attributed to climate change. While the stationary front’s tail crosses Belize tonight and Friday, leading to an increase in potential showers and thunderstorms along the coast, temperatures are expected to rise again beginning Sunday as Belize moves into what Gordon says is statistically the hottest part of the year – mid-April to mid-May before the start of the rainy season.

The Met Service continues to issue advisories on heat conditions and when those are issued, Belizeans are encouraged to stay out of the direct sun and keep hydrated if they are outdoors.
