Itzamna Society receives funding from GEF Small Grants Programme for project at Elijio Panti National Park

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Itzamna Society successfully secured funding for its upcoming project, “Enhancing Indigenous Stewardship of the Elijio Panti National Park.

The funding provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme – Belize aims to invest BZ$100,000.00 to catalyze positive change within the landscape.

The signing ceremony took place at the Noj K’aax H’men Elijio Panti National Park on April 3, 2024.

Ministry of Sustainable Development Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Orlando Habet, Ian King, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Belize, Leonel Requena, National Coordinator of the GEF Small Grants Programme and Belize National Biodiversity Office Acting Director Saul Cruz participated in the signing ceremony.

The project aims to assist the organization in achieving its mission of improving the lives of indigenous people through a culture-focused and collaborative approach focusing on ensuring the Elijio Panti National Park’s ecological integrity, supporting community development, and preserving cultural patrimony.

The project will focus on various initiatives, including capacity development, eco-tourism activities, increased surveillance and patrol, and protected area stewardship.

Through this project, opportunities will be provided for community members, such as women, youth, students, and farmers.

The Itzamna Society expressed its gratitude to the GEF Small Grants Programme-Belize GEF Small Grants Programme—Belize for their support in enabling It to continue working towards Sustainable development.
