Posted: Thursday, April 4, 2024. 2:11 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Garifuna Council says that in celebration of Garifuna Survival Day and in acknowledgment of the profound importance of the Garifuna heritage, the National Garifuna Council and the Battle of the Drums Secretariat announce the official launch of the Garifuna Language in Schools Program.

The program will launch on April 11th, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. on the grounds of Holy Family R.C. School in Hopkins Village, Belize.

“This momentous occasion, occurring 222 years after our ancestors’ arrival on the shores of Belize, stands as a testament to our enduring journey and unwavering commitment to preserving our unique language. As we embark on this initiative, we embody the spirit of unity and determination, demonstrating that together, we can safeguard our cultural identity for future generations. The phrase “Au bun amürü nun” resonates deeply within this endeavor, symbolizing our collective strength, resilience and resolve,” the National Garifuna Council said.

The implementation of the Garifuna Language in Schools Program, which encompasses the daily teaching of the Garifuna Language in the target schools and a professional development plan, will initially take place in Barangu, Peini, Senbeidi, Georgetown, Dangriga, and Yugadan communities, with plans for expansion in the future.

“This initiative also reflects our community’s steadfast resolve to uphold and revitalize the use of our ancestral language, ensuring its enduring legacy for many years to come,” the National Garifuna Council added.

The National Garifuna Council invites all members of the community to join in this journey of preservation and celebration.

“Together, let us continue to acknowledge our legacy, honor our heritage and ensure the continued vibrancy of the Garifuna language,” the council expressed.
