Former BDF soldier pleads guilty to assaulting police officer

By Aaron Humes: Wayne Perry, 22, has pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer while in the act of resisting arrest last October.

Perry was discharged from the Belize Defence Force (BDF) after a conviction for misconduct in the disappearance of an M-4 rifle from the BDF in 2023. He was fined $400 and cost of court and not jailed after changing his not guilty plea to guilty and asking for mercy.

Perry has until April 28 to pay his fine, in default four months imprisonment.

The Senior Magistrate noted that while he had no previous convictions for aggravated assault, and though he pleaded guilty, the discount which is usually awarded to defendants when they plead guilty could not be applied to Perry’s case as he had been remanded to prison pending the recent revocation of his bail for not showing up in court for his case.

Perry was accused of aggravated assault upon Sergeant of Police Andres Hernandez on October 18, 2023, at around 2:40 p.m., at the Racoon Street Police Station in Belize City. Sergeant Hernandez was on duty assisting a Constable in escorting a male prisoner identified as Perry from the office area to the cell block area of the station, when Perry began to show resistance and hit the Sergeant in the face, causing a swelling.
