Belize condemns violation by Ecuadorian Police against Mexican Embassy

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2024. 9:58 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The leaders and Governments of Latin America have issued statements condemning the decision by Ecuador to forcefully raid the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador on Friday night.

Ecuador’s Former Vice President Jorge Glas was inside of the Mexican embassy since he had requested asylum in Mexico.

Glas was detained following the raid.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize have also issued a statement condemning the “violation by Ecuadorian Police against the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Ecuador.”

The Ministry underscored that relations among states are governed by long-established international laws under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961).

“Belize supports efforts to maintain the Latin America and Caribbean region as a zone of peace and encourages both parties to engage in dialogue to find a solution to this latest issue,” the Ministry reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa had argued that asylum protections were illegal because of the corruption charges Glas is facing.
