Belize needs more Meteorologists!

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2024. 3:32 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says that the National Meteorological Service of Belize continues to conduct outreach at schools across the country.

Gordon said that several senior personnel of the Met office are retired or about to retire and there is need for new qualified and trained Meteorological officers.

“We encourage students to pursue this field and the Meteorological office does outreach to schools but this field is not offered in Belize so they would need to go abroad to get qualified,” Gordon said.

Gordon also explained that many Met officers are tasked with a variety of things since they are the only ones qualified.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize provides services for the aviation sector, forecasting hurricanes, observations, air navigation forecasts, specialized forecasts for Agriculture, Sargassum and Marine.

In addition, there is also a Fire risk forecast that is provided for the Forest Department.
