International News: Governments across Latin America express solidarity with Mexico following Embassy raid in Ecuador

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2024. 8:51 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Governments across Latin America have expressed solidarity with Mexico following an armed raid on its Embassy in Ecuador on Friday night.

According to Reuters, Ecuador’s Former Vice President Jorge Glas was inside of the Mexican embassy since he had requested asylum in Mexico.

During the raid on the Mexican Embassy, authorities in Ecuador forcefully entered, raided the Embassy and detained Glas.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has since blasted the unusual diplomatic incursion and described the arrest as an “authoritarian” act as well as a breach of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa had argued asylum protections were illegal because of the corruption charges Glas is facing.

Still, under international law, embassies are considered the sovereign territory of the country they represent.

Since then, the Governments of Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay and others have issued statements expressing solidarity with Mexico and condemning Ecuador’s decision calling it a “clear violation” of international norms prohibiting such a raid on a foreign embassy.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller also said in a statement that the United States condemns any violation of the convention protecting diplomatic missions.
