By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola striker Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton nailed Progresso and eliminated them last Sunday while securing his team’s ticket to the Premier League of Belize 2023-24 Closing Championship playoffs.

Back from a broken leg injury suffered in December against Progresso, Thurton, the 2023-24 Opening Championship’s Most Valuable Player, scored Port Layola’s second goal, securing the victory in the 82nd minute at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City on Sunday. What a coincidence that in his second stint on the field on his return to competitive action, he would score against Progresso at the same stadium where he had fractured his upper right ankle in a play involving Honduran Jose Tinoco Velásquez.

At the time, Thurton said he would be out for the entire season, but his recovery has gone well and was given the red light to return to training and then to competitive action.

His first ‘taste of action’ was against Verdes in Port Layola’s 2-0 loss at the Norman Broaster Stadium in Cayo on Holy Saturday. Thurton entered the field for the last eight minutes in substitution of Jarret Davis.

This past Sunday, he replaced Orlando Velasquez for the last 25 minutes and during that time he ensured that Progresso went home eliminated from any possibility of the playoffs with his ‘welcome back’ goal.

Thurton said he’s not forcing it and will take it a step at a time, but figures he’ll be ready for the playoffs.

“It’s good but I need to get rid of the fear,” Thurton said.

“I’m not fully there yet, but every game I’ll come in and by the time the playoffs begin I’ll be good to start.”

Thurton said this is his second fracture though the first one wasn’t as bad.

“I was playing for Verdes when I broke my forearm in a game against Wagiya back in 2015,” Thurton said.

Since that was a forearm fracture, the return was easier, he said.

The goal last Sunday against Progresso was from a left-foot shot. The goal was such a beauty that it gained an accolade from basketballer Bart Sanchez who has been following football for quite a while.

“That goal that he scored yesterday was classic, perfect timing and accuracy,” said Sanchez, who videotaped many football games working for Krem and who has a good take on football, in a social media post.

“He is still not 100 in terms of conditioning but believe me, next year opponents going have problems with that youth.

“I have never seen a player like Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton. The youth is very super and very extraordinary. He can strike the ball with tremendous accuracy. Norman “Tilliman” Nunez and David “Manu” Macaulay is the closest I’ve seen to strike the  ball with both feet. Gilroy Thurton [is] different though, he has speed, excellent control and exciting one on one moves. He stops the ball on a dime, whether on the ground or in the air.”

As he cements his return, Thurton said he’ll be trying the right foot, the one he fractured, more and more.

With Thurton joining Latrell Middleton, the present PLB lead scorer, in Port’s striking line, the Belize City club is expected to be a more formidable opponent for the semifinals.
