Common-law-husband cries in court after pleading guilty to assaulting wife but avoids jail time

Posted: Wednesday, April 10, 2024. 8:53 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Honduran national of Lords Bank, Belize District, 53-year-old Efrain Venicio Palacio, pleaded guilty to common assault upon his common-law-wife during a domestic dispute, putting her in fear after breaking up their household items in the act.

But he was contrite in court, tearing up after pleading guilty despite claiming his partner was aggressive toward him as well. Nonetheless, he professed remorse and swore he would never do it again.

Palacio was fined $300 and cost of court fine to be paid by May 31, 2024, in default three months in jail.

The 25-year-old complainant told police that on April 6, Palacio, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, began to break things inside her house, cuss her out, and raise his hand to her in front of their children. He had allegedly come back drunk from the store.
