‘I’m sorry momma:’ Son must keep the peace with his mother after choking her in dispute

By Aaron Humes: An unemployed man of the George Price Highway has been told to avoid further dispute with his mother after allegedly choking her and threatening to kill her and his partner.

25-year-old Jose Neri Mayorga Fuentes of Mile 20, George Price Highway (Cashew Farm Housing Site) was charged with common assault. He initially pleaded not guilty, but as the court considered how to keep the pair separate while the case was being tried, he decided to plead guilty.

Fuentes, who claimed he lived separately from his mother, told Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola that he was not in his right mind at the time of the incident; that he was intoxicated, and didn’t even remember what he had done.

The Chief Magistrate replied that intoxication is not a defense to a crime committed and that he cannot go around threatening people’s lives. Fuentes apologized and begged forgiveness.

Fuentes was fined $200 and cost of court due by May 15, in default two months in jail, and was bound over to keep the peace with his mother for a full year, otherwise, he would spend three months behind bars.

According to the women, they were attacked around 1 in the morning and threatened with their lives by Jose Fuentes, who said he would use a machete and gun on them both.
