By Aaron Humes: Who, or what, killed American national 46-year-old Jennifer Griffith on Saturday night?

The answers lie in a pending post-mortem examination which was to have been done on Tuesday.

Griffith and her Belizean husband got into an accident in a golf car after crashing into the outer wall of a bar. Subsequently, there was a fight involving conch shells and other objects, with police in the middle.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams stated that Griffith may have hit her head during the collision which led to the brawl, but he could not speak to other injuries. However, he noted that “She went to the polyclinic with the police and she refused medical treatment and self-discharged from the clinic and went home. The next morning, she seemingly was having pain and she went back to the clinic where she succumbed. At this time, we are not able to say what the cause of death is, if she died as a result of the conch shell or as a result of the accident.”

Several persons have been detained. According to the Commissioner, while Griffith indicated to police that she did not want action against the individuals involved in the brawl, her death makes her wishes moot and they could face anywhere from disorderly behavior to manslaughter if their actions were found to have contributed to her death. If it was the accident that caused the death, however, the husband would face vehicular-related manslaughter charges.

While police await the results of the autopsy their investigations continue.
