By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Leading up to the end of the regular season and though all four teams have qualified for the playoffs, the four are battling for ranking for positions two to four. To that end and to give no one an edge over their opponents, all the  Week 13 matches are being played on Saturday, April 13, at the same time.

These weekend games will be played in Belmopan, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Orange Walk Town, and Independence.

At present Port Layola, Altitude, and Benque Viejo United are tied with 23 points each and all three have qualified to the playoffs. Port are in second, Altitude are in third, and Benque Viejo United in fourth. All three are jostling for position, and it would be safe to say that they are all trying to avoid finishing in fourth place so as not to face leaders Verdes in the semifinals.

Of the three, the ones with the best probability of overcoming the Verdes hurdle are Altitude who have beaten Verdes this season, and have done likewise in previous seasons.

Of the four games, two are high octane matches as they involve the three vying for position.

Champions Altitude take on sixth place Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) on Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence. Judging by the game Police Benque gave Verdes last weekend, they will not roll over and will put up a good fight against the champions.

And while that will be a good game, the biggest game will have Benque Viejo United tackling Port Layola at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. A win for either will go a long way in avoiding finishing fourth. A win will also go a long way in securing second place to give them home advantage in the playoffs.

The third match features Progresso against Verdes at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk. While Verdes have secured the top spot going into the playoffs, Progresso are out of the playoff picture. However, both want another win. So, expect a good game.

The fourth match will pit the Bandits against Wagiya at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium. While the game doesn’t have any playoff implications, both are in a struggle to avoid last place. At present, Wagiya have six points and Bandits have five. A win will ensure Wagiya avert last place and will put Bandits close to avoiding the cellar where they now find themselves.
