By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twelve years after he won the Nаtіоnаl Agriculture and Тrаdе Ѕhоw’s (NАТЅ) Junior Farmer of the Year award, Nandy Esban Aldana of Concepcion, Corozal, is now the Senior Farmer of the Year at just 27 years of age.

“Mr. Aldana farms some 10 acres of sweet corn, onion, carrots, watermelon and radish,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in recognizing Aldana’s achievements.

“Aldana also keeps  some cattle, feeding them everything rejected for sale at the farm. It’s also worthy to note that Nandy had also won Junior Farmer of the Year 12 years ago, in 2012.”

Aldana’s dedication to farming which started when he was 15 years old has shaped a robust agricultural venture, Nandy’s Farms, spanning 20 acres. His strategic use of land, allocating specific acreage to a variety of crops like sweet corn, onions, watermelons, carrots, and cassava, demonstrates a keen understanding of crop rotation and soil management.

This year he has dedicated three acres for sweet corn, one acre each for yellow onions, purple onions, watermelon and carrots, and half an acre for cassava.

The inclusion of a cattle herd of 12 and a seed nursery further diversifies his farm, enhancing its sustainability and resilience.

Aldana gets water from a well from where he pumps water to irrigate his crops.

Recently, Aldana benefitted from the Mexican-funded Sembrando Vida project, an initiative by the Mexican government, which aims to support farmers like Aldana by promoting food self-sufficiency and environmental recovery through agroforestry systems. This project not only provides economic incentives and agricultural inputs but also imparts valuable training over eight months, contributing to the development of sustainable farming communities. Aldana’s participation in this project likely provided him with additional resources and knowledge to optimize his farm’s output and sustainability..
