“She is a single mother of 2, farms pitahaya, watermelons, tomatoes, soursop, coconuts and mangoes,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in recognizing Escobar’s achievements.

“Maura hopes to expand her acreage and sell even more pitahaya on the export market. Hats off to Maura Escobar, female Junior Farmer of the Year.”

Finca La Familia Escobar is a substantial agricultural operation encompassing 48 acres, with 20 acres developed and another 20 mechanized for efficient farming.

Farming since 2019, Escobar has dedicated seven acres to the cultivation of pitahaya, also known as dragon fruit, which is known for its vibrant appearance and unique taste. Additionally, the farm allocates 1.5 acres each to mango and soursop. A smaller plot of half an acre is reserved for cantaloupe, a sweet melon that is popular in Belize.

The Finca La Familia Escobar also operates a nursery for tomatoes and cantaloupes, ensuring a continuous cycle of planting and harvesting.

Escobar also maintains a flock of 75 broiler chickens.

Water, a critical resource for any agricultural endeavor, is sourced from both a pond and a spring, providing natural irrigation options for the farm.

This integrated approach to farming allows for a sustainable and productive operation that can cater to various market demands.
