Island Donors Squad hosts a successful blood drive on Ambergris Caye

Posted: Friday, April 12, 2024. 1:33 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Island Donors Squad (IDS) held an inaugural blood drive on April 6 at Ambergris Hope Hospital in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, which collected 11 pints of blood from donors.

Laurie Norton, alias Tacogirl, teamed with Ambergris Hope Hospital and The Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye to establish the foundation, leaning on ten years of experience in island blood drives. Working closely with Belize National Blood Transfusion Services (BNBTS), the goal is to increase blood collection and related services on the island and beyond. 2023 statistics reflect a 12 percent voluntary donor base in Belize which IDS hopes to double.

IDS, based on the success of the drive, is planning expansion and education in conjunction with Community Health Worker, Martha Rosado and will respond to outreach Corozal and Placencia. There is development of a rare blood type list with four O-negative persons added. The target donor age of 18 to 24 years old is set. 2 pints replacement blood allocated and 2 in process of allocation. Both cases were medical emergencies in process. people experiencing a medical emergency should not have the added stress of self-advocating for blood to replace what they need back into the blood bank.

Five students from San Pedro High School – Abner Balab, Rochelle Acosta, Jasmine Euceda, Jatziris Juarez and Estrella Roano – became founding members of IDS’ Island Youth Squad and raised over $500 BZ in their dollar drive efforts.

In support of IDS’ commitment to raise the inventory of blood and increase the donor population to 25 percent of Belize citizens, another drive will occur sometime in June, to coincide with the celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14. Please like and frequent Island Donors Squad page on Facebook and let us know how you want to contribute to this momentous, life-saving cause. To qualify as a donor, you must be between the ages of 18 and 65; have no tattoos or piercings in the last year; and have no allergies to medicines. Please be mindful to abstain from alcohol and smoking the night before a donation.
