By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Nаtіоnаl Agriculture and Тrаdе Ѕhоw (NАТЅ) Committee announced 37-year-old Sara Chub of Boston Village in the Belize District as the 2024 Woman Farmer of the Year.

“She has vegetables such as sweet peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes, and fruit trees such as mangoes, coconuts and wax apples,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in recognizing Chub’s achievements.

“She farms 30 acres of plantain in Bomba, keeps some pigs, and is active in her village- she is Chairlady of the Boston Village Council. Congrats to Mrs. Sara Chub, Female Farmer of the Year.”

The Sarita Coconut Farm, a sprawling 30-acre agricultural haven, is a testament to sustainable and diversified farming along the Old Northern Highway near Bomba. With a third of its land developed and a portion mechanized, the farm stands as a model of modern agricultural practices fused with traditional farming wisdom.

The farm’s fruit trees, including coconuts, mangoes, breadfruits, and plantains, not only diversifies its produce but also ensures a year-round harvest, catering to both local markets and contributing to food security. Moreover, the venture into coconut water production taps into the growing demand for natural and healthy beverages, showcasing the farm’s adaptability to market trends.

The integration of honey production signifies a step towards apiculture, which benefits the pollination of crops and adds a valuable product to the farm’s offerings.

Her water source is a pond which she uses for the irrigation of her farm maximizing on-site resources and reducing the reliance on external water supplies.

This approach to farming, where every element serves multiple purposes, creates a resilient agricultural ecosystem. The trees provide shade, reduce soil erosion, and contribute to the farm’s microclimate, while the honeybees enhance crop yields through pollination. The pond not only irrigates the farm but also supports local biodiversity,

In essence, Sarita Coconut Farm embodies the principles of permaculture, where each component works in harmony with others, creating a sustainable and self-sufficient operation.

The NATS Соmmіttее соngrаtulаtеd the three wіnnеrѕ, which included Senior Fаrmеr оf thе Yеаr Nandy Esban Aldana of Concepcion, Corozal Dіѕtrісt and Junior Fаrmеr оf thе Yеаr Маurа Еѕthеr Еѕсоbаr оf thе Сауо Dіѕtrісt, “fоr thеіr hаrd wоrk аnd dеdісаtіоn аnd аррlаudѕ аll fаrmеrѕ fоr thеіr соntrіbutіоnѕ tо thе lіvеlіhооd аnd wеll-bеіng оf thе есоnоmу оf оur јеwеl Веlіzе”.
