By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Youth and Sports is holding a welcome motorcade on Saturday for Belizean athletes Demetrie Meyers and Brooklyn Lyttle, who recently won medals for Belize at the the 51st Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games in Saint George’s, Grenada.

At the regional Games held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St George’s from March 30 to April 1, 2024, 16-year-old Meyers won gold in the 3,000-meters in nine minutes, 5.86 seconds (9:05.86). That was his second in that particular event. In 2023, Meyers won both the 3,000m and 1,500m at the 50th CARIFTA Games in Nassau, Bahamas in 2023. He was given a hero’s welcome on his return as well.

When Meyers first represented Belize in 2022, he won silver in the Under 17 3000m at the 49th CARIFTA Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Sixteen-year-old Brooklyn Lyttle won bronze in the girls’ under-17 long jump covering a distance of 18 feet and nine and a half inches.

In 2023, Lyttle won four gold medals at the CADICA U18-U20 Athletics Championships in Guatemala setting a new Central American record in long jump measuring 5.82 meters. She also won gold in the Women’s U18 100m, triple jump, and the 4x100m relay.

Lyttle also won bronze in the Under 18 triple jump at the NACAC (North and Central American, and Caribbean) Games in Costa Rica in 2023.

In a  press release, the Belize National Sports Council (NSC) said Minister of Youth, Sports & Transport Rodwell Ferguson and the National Sports Council of Belize would welcome both athletes at the Philip Goldson International Airport when they arrive at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 13.

“A motorcade will follow after their arrival from the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) in Ladyville to Belize City,” the NSC statement said.
