Caught using your cellphone while driving? Face fines or jail time

Posted: Sunday, April 14, 2024. 11:28 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: As of March 1st, Belizean motorists face serious consequences for using cellphones while driving. The new regulations, alongside mandatory seatbelt use for all vehicle occupants, aim to reduce preventable accidents and save lives.

The law against cellphone use while operating a vehicle carries stiff penalties: a fine of up to $500 or even six months imprisonment. Traffic officials are now equipped with new speed monitoring technology to aid enforcement efforts.

Authorities highlight the importance of these updated rules as a significant step forward for road safety. They acknowledge an adjustment period for all drivers but emphasize the need to eliminate distractions behind the wheel.

Even hands-free technology can be a source of distraction, and officials strongly advise drivers to make the necessary changes to avoid potentially hefty fines or jail time.

Key Points of the New Regulations

  • Seatbelts are mandatory: All drivers and passengers, in both urban and rural areas, must buckle up while the vehicle is in motion. Failure to do so carries a fine of up to $50.
  • No cellphones while driving: The use of electronic devices, including cellphones, is strictly prohibited. Authorities stress that even hands-free use can be a dangerous distraction.

Let’s make responsible choices on the road. Protect yourself and others by always wearing seatbelts and staying focused on driving.
