By Horace Palacio: Last week, Belizean government ministers convened for their regular Cabinet meeting, where the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) presented key findings from the 2022 census. The data is expected to be vital in shaping upcoming policy decisions, as it reveals important trends and changes in the nation’s demographics.
SIB Director-General Diana Castillo-Trejo led the presentation, highlighting a significant shift: Belize now has a female-majority population.
“This last point is a continuation of a trend that we have been seeing slowly emerging over the past several decades,” stated Trejo. “Decade over decade from one round of the census to the next, what we saw was [a] gradual evening out until 2010 when we were at virtually 50-50. The number of males, the number of females was virtually even and in 2022 the trend continued in that direction where the number of females slightly overtook the number of males.”
The 2022 census also indicated an aging population, with the national median age increasing from 21 in 2010 to 25 in 2022. However, there was a positive trend in educational attainment, with more Belizeans pursuing higher education compared to a decade ago.
A comprehensive report on the census findings will be released by the Statistical Institute of Belize in the near future.
