Bench warrant issued and later cancelled for COMPOL’s brother, Arthur Roy Williams, in ongoing criminal case

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A bench warrant was issued on Friday and later cancelled for Arthur Roy Williams, 53, the brother of Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Chester Williams. Williams, a driver for the Ombudsman and resident of Dangriga, was late for his third court appearance in a criminal matter.

At 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Williams’ name was called three times in Court #6, but he failed to answer or appear. Due to his absence and tardiness, the sitting Senior Magistrate executed a bench warrant for his arrest. When Williams finally arrived at the court around 9:30 am, he was immediately placed in the holding area pending an appearance before the Magistrate to explain his lateness.

After Williams provided his reason for being late, the bench warrant was cancelled, and he was released. He then appeared before the Senior Magistrate in Court #6 at around 10 am, where he apologized for being half an hour late. The case was adjourned once again.

Despite being told that he would receive disclosure in his case, Williams expressed disappointment that it did not happen. His next court date is set for May 13.

Outside the courtroom, Williams shared that he was detained in the holding area but not in a cell until he was called into court. Although his attorney was not present, Williams views the proceedings as unfair. He mentioned facing many odds but remains patient throughout the process.

Williams was first arraigned on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on three criminal charges under the Cyber Crime Act. The charges include two counts of using a computer system to disseminate false statements with the intent to cause another person to be subject to public ridicule or embarrassment, and one count of using a computer system to intimidate a person. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail in February in the sum of $10,000, plus one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $5,000 each.
