International News: Court in Ecuador rules that Former Vice President’s arrest was illegal but he must remain in prison

Posted: Monday, April 15, 2024. 8:51 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last Friday, a court in Ecuador rules that the arrest of Former Vice President Jorge Glas was illegal, however, he must remain in prison due to previous convictions.

According to Reuters, Glas’ attorneys plan to appeal the court’s decision.

Glas, twice convicted of corruption and now facing new charges, was arrested a week ago during a raid by police in Ecuador at the Mexican Embassy in Quito.

The raid heightened diplomatic tensions between Ecuador and Mexico.

Governments across Latin America including Belize expressed solidarity with Mexico and called out Ecuador for violating international law.

The Former Vice President alleged that authorities beat him during the raid and arrest and the Government of Ecuador said that Glas was planning to escape.

Ecuador has since also argued that Mexico’s granting of asylum to Glas violates international laws which prohibit asylum for people facing criminal charges.
