Alleged homeless American mental patient denied bail pending second psychiatric evaluation in assault case

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Adeola Lara Ade-Ekisola, a 38-year-old American woman living in Belize claiming homelessness, remains in custody as she awaits further psychiatric evaluation. She was denied bail and further remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending a determination of her mental state before a plea can be taken for a common assault charge against her.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Ade-Ekisola’s mental state was questioned during her initial court appearance, leading Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola to order a psychiatric evaluation. In today’s court session before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3, it was revealed that a second psychiatric visit is required in two months to conclude the evaluation and for this, she must remain in prison.

During the proceedings, Ade-Ekisola, appearing calm and mentioning she was on medication, asked permission to sit due to feeling dizzy. The Senior Magistrate explained the evaluation’s purpose is to determine her fitness to stand trial. Ade-Ekisola inquired if she could be granted bail at this time, but the request was denied as she needs to remain in prison for the evaluation.

Her next court date is scheduled for June 14, 2024. Ade-Ekisola was initially brought to court on February 20 for common assault against a female police officer. According to police reports, Ade-Ekisola threw stones at the officer outside Precinct 1 Police Station on King Street. At her first appearance, Ade-Ekisola mentioned being a mother of three and living on the streets due to homelessness.
