Fonseca supports Vaughn, expresses disappointment over council controversy

Posted: Thursday, April 18, 2024. 6:50 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Freetown Area Representative Francis Fonseca, a known supporter of recently appointed Belize City Administrator Albert Vaughn, has expressed support for Vaughn’s selection while emphasizing he was not involved in the decision-making process.

Speaking to the media, Fonseca stated, “Obviously, I support Albert, but I should make it very clear… he is his own man, he makes his own decisions. So I did not encourage Albert to apply for the post of city administrator.” He added that he would have preferred for Vaughn to remain involved in local Freetown initiatives.

The appointment of Vaughn has been met with internal opposition within the Belize City Council. Some council members have labeled the decision unilateral and raised concerns about the selection process.

When asked about the controversy, Fonseca replied, “Yeah, I really, to be very honest with you, I am so busy that I have not been following the internal workings of the Belize City Council.” He expressed disappointment at the division, noting the efforts invested in electing the council.

“I don’t know where it’s coming from and what the objective is,” Fonseca stated. “I think all of them know Albert Vaughn and they know that he is a good man who works very hard and is committed to Belize City.”

Fonseca concluded by urging the council to resolve the situation amicably and focus on the needs of Belize City residents: “The residents of Belize City want to have a city council that is working for them and that’s what’s most important.”
